A court in Bangladesh has ordered an investigation into former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s alleged involvement in the murder of a grocery store owner in Dhaka. The case was filed by Amir Hamza, who claims the killing occurred last month during protests against government job reservations. The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka has accepted the case for a hearing, according to BBC reports, with Hamza’s lawyer, Anwarul Haque, confirming the development. Following the hearing, Magistrate Rajesh Chaudhary ordered an investigation into Hasina’s role in the incident.
The ongoing protests in Bangladesh have seen widespread violence, resulting in hundreds of deaths. However, this is the first time a case has been filed against Hasina in connection with these fatalities. The investigation will also look into the roles of the Awami League’s General Secretary, a former Home Minister, and several senior police officials.
The incident in question took place on July 19, when police fired shots at protesters, and Abu Saeed, the grocery store owner, was hit by a bullet.
